Yoga, as we all know, has the ability to change the physical body, calm the mind, and elevate the soul. But do we really understand how a yoga session differs from other types of exercise like walking, treadmill jogging, or lifting weights?
Without the attentive breath, each position, although holy and important, may actually encourage stiffness. Simply stated, the breath enables the posture (and the practitioner) to flow through the practice, and eventually through life, rather of forcing their way through.

The air we breathe, like the wind, is the vehicle that propels us up and away, enabling us to take flight and eventually transcend the heaviness of our surroundings.
What goes up must eventually come down.
Vayu, the Hindu god of AIR, is in charge of our surroundings’ environment and ambience. Vayu is channeled via the breath.
Vayu energy travels in five directions, but we’ll focus on the first two: Prana Vayu (inhalation), which inspires and uplifts, and Apana Vayu (exhalation), which is the moving force of release and surrender.
When you can breathe easily in any balanced asana, finding your “wings” and deepening your “roots” while retaining sthira, or stability, you’ve reached the pinnacle of equanimity between Prana Vayu and Apana Vayu.
The three yoga postures below will assist you in walking (or flying!) that thin line. During each asana, practice noticing the upward flow of Prana Vayu and the downward settling of Apana Vayu.
1. The Paradise Bird (Svarga Dvidasana)

“I shall maintain a constant focus,” says the mantra.
- With your right leg in front, begin in Extended Side Angle Pose, or Parsvakonasana.
- To do a half bind, inhale and reach your left arm behind your back.
- Reach your right arm beneath your right thigh and wrap your right middle finger and thumb around your left wrist if you can breathe easily.
- Make sure you can keep your chest open; if not, go with the half bind, which will work just as well.
- Exhale as you step your left foot to the top of the mat, maintaining hip width space between your feet.
- Inhale and transfer your weight to your left leg, gradually rising to your feet and extending your right leg with a full or half bind.
- Take a deep breath and direct your eyes straight ahead, taking in your bird’s eye view of heaven!
- Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths.
- Before repeating on the other side, release the bind and move into Mountain Pose or Tadasana.
2. Pose of the Eagle (Garudasana)
“I shall easily endure,” says the mantra.
- Start with Mountain Pose.
- Inhale and cross your right leg over your left thigh, wrapping your right foot around your left calf if feasible.
- Exhale and loop your left elbow inside your right arm, maintaining your elbows at shoulder height and your hands in prayer position.
- Allow your Eagle to take flight by resting your sight over your middle finger tips.
- Repeat on the other side, holding for 5 to 10 breaths before releasing into Mountain Pose.
3. Pose of the Crane
“I shall defy gravity,” says the mantra.
- Begin by squatting with your knees close together in a squatting posture.
- To avoid sinking too deeply into the wrist, inhale and plant your hands firmly on the floor, gripping the fingers into the mat.
- Exhale and lean forward, bringing your knees as close to your armpits as possible (adjust by bending your elbows and/or maintaining your feet on the floor) until you can easily lift off.
- If you jump into this position with too much power, you may end yourself face down on the floor.
- For 5 to 10 breaths, inhale patience and expel patience, knowing that the Crane can reach incredible heights!
- Return to Mountain Pose by releasing back into your squat.
Remember that asana alone will help you gain strength and flexibility, but without pranayama, you’ll only be able to experience a fraction of what yoga has to offer.
The Vayu currents may be harnessed and directed by combining breath and movement to awaken conscious awareness, excite the senses, and ultimately offer us the satisfaction that can only be found when we ground into the NOW.
