10 Cool Games to Play on Raspberry Pi OS (Without Emulator) –

Looking for a cool game to play on your Raspberry Pi? Playing games on a Raspberry Pi is one of the best ways to learn about computer programming. There are hundreds of free and shareware games available for the Raspberry Pi, but there are also many other games which are paid for. But don’t worry, we will show you some cool games which are free to play without using any emulator. Hope this post can help you to get more interested in Raspberry Pi games.

In this post, we are going to look at Raspberry Pi OS which is an operating system for the Raspberry Pi computer. Raspberry Pi is a credit-card size computer, which can be used for many things. These include playing games, web browsing, watching movies, and programming. This OS is a good choice for those who want to use the Raspberry Pi as a Linux based computer.

Raspberry Pi is a most amazing and useful computer. It is powered by ARM and is mainly used in educational institutes, schools, colleges, and small firms to teach computer courses to budding engineers. It is cheap, compact and comes with a lot of great features. This applies to the Raspberry Pi 2 model B.

Gaming is one of the most popular Raspberry Pi applications. Many customers (including you?) acquired it with the intention of installing Retropie or another emulator and playing old games on it. However, if you aren’t a committed player, you may only utilize it to take a break and play a mini-game on occasion.

That is why I decided to write this article! There are a lot of games in the Raspberry Pi OS repository. I’ve had the chance to explore a variety of games, and I’ll share a shortlist with you here. The majority of the games I tried were bad, and some were too resource-intensive to run smoothly on the Raspberry Pi, but I chose ten games from various genres that run well and are worth trying.

The alphabetical order of the list is as follows: I didn’t bother ranking the games because it would largely rely on the type of game you enjoy, even though I do have favorites, as you’ll see :). You can use the “Add/Remove Software” application or apt in the command line to install the games. In most cases, the package name is the same as the game name. If you’re not sure how to accomplish it, check out this tutorial.

0 A.D. is a free real-time strategy game with some outstanding features. It’s remarkably similar to what you’ll discover in Age of Empires. You begin with a little town with only the town hall and a few residents, and you must construct everything from the ground up.

Your inhabitants will gather materials from around the settlement (wood, food, stone, and so on) in order to construct new structures (houses, farms, military buildings, etc.). Each structure will reveal new units or features. You’ll need them to progress to a new civilization era, unlocking new structures and enhancing the ones you already have.

There are military units since you will be attacked frequently by other AI-controlled players. As a result, you’ll need more military units, walls, and defensive structures to not only acquire more resources, but also to keep your village secure.

The game runs smoothly on the Raspberry Pi 4, and there are a number of settings you can modify to boost the graphics or speed, depending on how well it runs on yours. You should be able to find a solution to make it run well even on older models.

Abe 1627978838_971_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

I didn’t have the same enthusiasm for Abe, but if you enjoy platformers, it’s a fun game to play. I don’t recall the name of this game, but it reminds me of one I played as a kid, most likely on an Atari.

On the game’s website, the developer explains that the game was created to show young people all of the interesting games they were missing out on. I’m not sure it’ll keep kids entertained for long, but if you’re an adult who misses that type of game, you know what to do!

BillardGL 1627978839_292_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

On the Raspberry Pi OS, I tried a few different billiard games. Some are ugly, and many are too slow to play well, which is a shame because this is exactly the type of game you can play when you only have a few minutes to spare.

Regardless, I discovered that BillardGL is the best of the bunch. There is a training mode and a two-player mode, and the graphics are accurate. Unfortunately, there is no way to play against the AI, but you can start a two-player game and play both sides; you’ll almost certainly win :).

The game can be set up for 8 or 9 balls, and there are a variety of camera angles to choose from. Toggle between view, aim, and shot modes by pressing space.

Gnome-games 1627978840_491_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

Although it isn’t exactly a game, the “gnome-games” package is something you should have on your Raspberry Pi if you want to play mini-games. It has a lot of possibilities, such as:

  • 2048
  • Chess
  • Mahjong
  • Minesweeper
  • Nibbles
  • Sudoku
  • Tetris

There’s nothing special here; all of the games are designed in the minimalist manner seen in the image, but it works, and it’s a simple way to add a bunch of games to your system with only one package to install.

Lincity-NG 1627978841_366_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

The collection also contains a large number of city simulation games. They employ the same game ideas as SimCity, in fact. I tested a few of them, but Lincity is the one I decided to keep on my list because it is the best. It offers the best balance of features and aesthetics.

If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, you begin with a nearly empty map/city and must construct and maintain it. Add new areas (houses, business or industrial zones), construct other centers of attraction (schools, fire and police stations, monuments, etc. ), and monitor your finances and reputation.

If you keep building your economy, it appears that there is a fun finale to the game; the GitHub page claims that all inhabitants can be evacuated with spaceships :).

MrRescue 1627978841_919_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

Have you always wanted to be a firefighter? MrRescue can help you with that. It’s a mini-game in which you must put out the local fire and save everyone in the building. Here’s a quick video to show you how it works:

It’s not difficult to play; just use the arrows to move and a few keys to perform actions, but it’s far superior to other 2D games I’ve tried.

Nexuiz 1627978843_151_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

If you’re searching for an FPS that runs on the Raspberry Pi, Nexuiz is a good option. The game has a solo mode where you can play against the AI, but it is best renowned for its multiplayer mode.

I tested Quake 3 on this website before, and while it was nice to see it run on the Raspberry Pi, it wasn’t as smooth as this one. Even though I haven’t played much, Nexuiz is probably better (not my favorite type of games).

It also works on any operating system, so if you have any friends or family members on the same network who could be interested in this game, the multiplayer mode is ideal.

Pingus 1627978844_795_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

Do you recall lemmings? The only difference is that you’re playing with penguins, the Linux mascot. Penguins are strewn across the top of the screen, and you must guide them to the exit. Levels become increasingly difficult as more tools become available and fewer victims are permitted.

For example, in the image, you can see one of the initial stages, where you must dig through the top layer to depart and then deploy a parachute to land safely on the map’s bottom layer. Penguins will always walk if you do not stop them, therefore they will eventually reach the exit.

That’s a fun puzzle video game, especially if you’ve played it before like me :).

SuperTux 1627978845_631_10-Cool-Games-to-Play-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS-Without

Is it really necessary for me to explain? Take Super Mario, add some snow, swap out Mario for Tux, and Penny for Penny, and you’ve got yourself a game:). The gameplay is the same: run, jump, grab coins, power-ups, and various things as you go.

The game is very wonderful, with excellent visuals and a variety of levels on several maps. If that isn’t enough, there are even some community levels available as add-ons.

Warmux is similarly based on the popular video game Worms. It was probably my brother’s favorite game when we were small, and it’s quite close.

Two or more teams are fighting with firearms, bazookas, grenades, and other weaponry. The names and members of the team are based on several well-known open-source projects (Gnus, penguins, foxes, etc.). In single-player mode, you’ll control one of your team’s characters while the AI controls the other. However, you can play with other people on the same computer (one for each team, or several players per team, each in turn).

It doesn’t appear to consume a lot of resources and runs smoothly on the Raspberry Pi, so give it a shot if you enjoy this game.
